Public Exhibits and Displays

Exhibits Policy

The Upton Community Center has designated display and exhibition space which is available to community groups or individuals engaged in educational, cultural, intellectual or charitable activities who agree to the guidelines outlined below.

Exhibits created by the Upton Department of Elder and Social Services or the Upton Town Library have first priority for installation, and do not require an exhibition agreement.

Other local community groups and individuals may request use of the exhibit space by following the procedures below.

Priority is given to municipal departments, boards and commissions. Preference is given to exhibits on local history, children’s projects and collections belonging to members of the community.

Our current display spaces as of 5/1/2023 are:

A 46” by 53” glass fronted display case located in the Library entryway. This case is lockable.

8’ of picture hanging rails in the Children’s area.

10’ of picture hanging rails in the circulation spine.

Display space must be reserved in advance. The display period is normally for one month, coinciding as closely as possible to the beginning and ending of the month. Display periods can be increased or decreased at the discretion of the Library Director. Displays are accepted at the discretion of the Library Director.

The Library Director has the right to review the materials before the exhibit is installed. The community center will not accept displays judged to be either illegal or inappropriate for public viewing. A decision not to accept materials for a display may be appealed to the Upton Town Manager.

In general, the Community Center does not accept exhibits of a purely commercial nature, unless they have a special educational, informational, or cultural value to the community.

The exhibitor must sign an agreement to comply in good faith with the following conditions:

a. Assume the risk of loss or damage to materials exhibited, as no insurance is provided.

b. Assume responsibility for installing and labeling the exhibit on the agreed upon date. c. Remove the exhibit promptly on the agreed upon date. The community center has the right to dispose of exhibit materials if not removed by the agreed upon date.

d. Identify the exhibitor by name within the display.

e. Refrain from commercial advertisement. Prices of items for sale may not be posted.

f. A notice is to be posted with each exhibit stating that: “The material within this exhibit is the presentation of the individual or organization named in the display. The community center does not advocate or endorse the viewpoints of exhibits or exhibitors.”

g. Community center employees have the right to remove a display at any time.

Individuals or groups interested in displaying materials should contact the Library Director.
